Germany’s travel and tourism industry is on track for a remarkable year in 2025. According to the latest insights from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), international visitor spending is projected to reach an all-time high of €57 billion, setting a new benchmark for inbound tourism in the country.
Strong Economic Contribution and Job Creation
Based on the WTTC’s Economic Impact Research (EIR), the sector is expected to contribute €499 billion to Germany’s GDP in 2025—representing 11.6% of the total economy. Furthermore, the industry is forecasted to support 6.5 million jobs, accounting for 14% of the national workforce.
Record-Breaking Domestic Tourism
In addition to international gains, domestic travel is also seeing impressive momentum. Visitor spending by residents is expected to surpass previous records and reach €425 billion, reinforcing Germany’s position as a leader in both European and global tourism.
Policy Support and Sustainability at the Core
Germany’s tourism development is strategically aligned with its broader economic goals, with tourism policy now integrated into the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. This integration ensures a focus on sustainable growth, showing that environmental responsibility and economic advancement can go hand in hand.
Performance Snapshot: 2024
The sector had a solid performance in 2024, contributing €484 billion to the national economy and supporting 6.1 million jobs. Domestic visitor spending stood at €422.3 billion, while international visitors spent €45.1 billion—laying the groundwork for 2025’s anticipated expansion.
Looking Ahead: 2035 Projections
The WTTC projects that by 2035, Germany’s travel and tourism sector will contribute a substantial €579 billion to GDP—about 12.1% of the total economy—and support 7.6 million jobs. International visitor spending is forecasted to rise to €74 billion, with domestic tourism expected to surpass €480 billion. Achieving these goals will require continued commitment to innovation, sustainability, and strengthening global competitiveness.
