Recent findings from Jumio, a leader in AI-driven identity intelligence, reveal a significant trust gap among global consumers regarding the travel industry’s ability to protect against identity fraud. As travel increasingly shifts to digital platforms, concerns about AI-powered scams, such as identity theft and account takeovers, are on the rise.

Consumer Trust in the Travel Sector

According to Jumio’s research, 44% of global consumers lack confidence in the travel industry’s ability to safeguard against AI-driven identity fraud, with this figure climbing to 55% among U.S. consumers. The reliance on digital platforms for booking flights, hotels, and rentals requires sharing sensitive information, like government-issued IDs, making consumers vulnerable, especially during busy travel seasons. In the sharing economy, including vacation rentals, trust is even lower. A striking 60% of U.S. consumers and 50% globally express doubts about the industry’s security measures. Additionally, 69% of respondents believe AI-powered fraud poses a greater threat than traditional identity theft, highlighting widespread concerns about digital security.

Consumers Prioritize Security

Despite these concerns, many consumers are willing to invest time in stronger identity verification processes. In 2025, 74% of global consumers are open to spending more time verifying their identity on travel and hospitality platforms, up from 71% in 2024. In the sharing economy, 70% of consumers share this willingness, preferring seamless yet visible security measures. This trend extends beyond travel, with 80% of global consumers ready to dedicate more time to security measures in high-risk sectors like banking and financial services.

Looking Ahead: Balancing Convenience and Protection

Bala Kumar, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Jumio, stresses the need for the travel industry to adopt innovative solutions that prioritize both convenience and security. As AI-driven scams evolve, traditional safeguards may fall short. Kumar advocates for robust digital protection strategies, comparable to physical safety measures like hotel safes or evacuation plans, to rebuild consumer trust. As the travel industry navigates this digital era, embracing advanced technologies and streamlined verification processes will be key to ensuring customer safety and confidence.
